Fans of the band, M People or the TV show Miranda, might be familiar with the headline to this blog.
But, 20 years after Heather Small and co. released it as a song, it’s still a good question to ask – especially now.
Pride isn’t a feeling we identify easily with and sometimes wouldn’t label it as such. But it’s that feeling of happiness that comes from achieving something, when we feel like we’ve done a good job or a difficult task.
It can come when you finish a patient’s treatment, particularly if it’s been extensive or complex, or when you learn some new clinical skill or achieve a growth target for your practice.
The problem is that lately, thanks to COVID-19, many of those things have disappeared.
For the past few months many of us have been running the whole gamut of emotion and as business owners, the focus has often been on what is coming down the line and what the ‘new normal’ routine will look like.
But even as practices begin to reopen and start establishing that new normal, it can be a huge morale boost to you and your team to find reasons to be proud of what you’re achieving right now, in the present moment.
Try the below, either as a team exercise, or a personal one and you’ll probably be surprised at how much you can come up with.
For each point write down what you/your team have done in relation to it:
1. How far you’ve come since lockdown began
2. Every obstacle you’ve overcome
3. Every time you’ve failed and dusted yourself off
4. Giving either time or money to a good cause
5. Every choice you’ve made
6. Every time you’ve helped someone
7. Being honest with yourself and others
8. A random act of kindness
9. Being a good friend
10. Every time you’ve made someone smile.

You can use this list as a personal or team motivational tool and keep adding to it. There will still be challenging times ahead, but it’s important to still celebrate the positives and the celebrations, no matter how big or small.
And don’t forget to ask yourself each day: What have you done today to make you feel proud?
